Jai Sanghera Among Numerous Young Indo-Canadian Medal Winners At Commonwealth Karate Championships

MONTREAL – The 7th annualCommonwealth KarateChampionships last weekend inMontreal saw many Indo-Canadian youngsters triumphing.They brought back medals fromthis International competitionsanctioned by theCommonwealth KarateFederation, where more thanten countries participatedincluding India, Australia, NewZealand, and South Africa.Jai Singh Sanghera, the bronzemedal winner from Burnaby inthe 14/15 age group under 70kg elite black belt division, facedone of the toughest competitionsof his life. His opponentsincluded the Canadian nationalgold and bronze medalists andthe Australian National goldmedalist. Nevertheless, hefought his way to a Bronzemedal.Other winners from BC included:Listisaac Mand, boys 14/15,under 57 kg – Bronze medal,Jacob Mand, boys 12/13, over45 kg (blue and brown belt) -Silver medal.There were also three female winnersfrom BC. In the women’s division under50 kg, Jusleen Kaur Virk won gold. Girls18-20, over 60 kg, Harpreet Kaur Sidhuwon bronze. Girls 16/17, under 53 kg,Gurkamel Kaur Gill won a Bronzemedal.All in all this was a very good tournamentfor our athletes and certainly there will bemuch more to come from theInternational arena in the coming years.
