SURREY – Makhan Singh Bhandal was honored for his volunteer work in front of thousands at the Guru Nanak Gurdwara’s annual sport tournament.  This recognition was for the many years he has spent in the sport of Kabaddi.

Although he retired from playing a few years ago his love for the game has kept him busy.  He helps out wherever and whenever he is needed.  In addition, he realized a few years ago that there was a need to develop Canadian born talent.  There were too many “imports” coming to play and the Canadian players’ opportunity was slowly eroding.  Thanks to him that has now changed.

There are many youngsters that are now playing at the highest competitive level.  When Bhandal played there were so many local teams and they did not rely on imports.  The tide seems to be turning in that direction again as more youngsters are taking up this favorite Punjabi pastime.

“He is a great man and was a great stopper as well.  He is a great coach to the new players” stated one fan and was described by another as the “Canadian Kabaddi living legend”.

Former Kabbadi and wrestling star Pinder Singh Hare described him as one of the greatest Kabaddi players and a true gentleman that is always there to help out the youngsters.

“He is the one that has developed all this young kids, I always respected him as a player and now I respect him even more as a coach”.

Pinder Singh along with the great Balwinder Singh (Fiddu) “The living legend” made the presentation accompanied by Jessy Sahota and Mittu Hare.
