CHANDIGARH – Women candidates have got a meagre share in ticket allotment by the major parties. The average is less than 10%, far short of the much-talked-about 33 per cent reservation.

The Congress, led by Sonia Gandhi, has nominated 10 women, a share of just 8 per cent. Four party leaders — Preneet Kaur, Charanjit Kaur Bajwa, Guriqbal Kaur and Karanjit Kaur Chowdhry — vacated their seats or gave up the ticket for male members of their family.

The Aam Aadmi Party has fielded nine female candidates (the party is contesting 112 seats). Its alliance partner, the Lok Insaaf Party, led by the Bains brothers, has not given any ticket to the fair sex.

The Akalis have nominated only five women candidates (5.3 per cent share) out of the 94 seats it is contesting. Its alliance partner, the BJP, which is contesting 23 seats, has fielded only two women (8.6 per cent).
