SURREY – While Surrey RCMP confirmed Tuesday morning (Aug. 27) that Harjinder Rai of Surrey had been located as reported in a number of Punjabi and Surrey community newspapers but the fact is that Rai was found not alive as indicated in some news stories but dead on Tuesday in Richmond.

Police have released very little about finding Rai’s body. He had been missing since Aug. 10. They have also not released any details as to the cause of death.

Rai was reported missing in the early morning hours of August 11th after he walked away from his residence following an altercation with a family member the night before on August 10th.

Family sources told the LINK that the altercation happened at a family celebration to mark Rai buying a new home and that it was a small altercation between Rai and his brother-in-law “saandu” (his wife’s sister’s husband) but it was nothing big that would lead him to leave the family home.

The source did say that Rai was very angry and upset after the incident.

Last week, his family offered $5,000 reward for any information leading to his whereabouts and this week’s his body was found. It’s not known exactly where in Richmond the body was found or who found it.

After walking away from his home in the 8100-block of 134 A Street, following an argument with a family member, Rai did not show up for work and did not have any contact with family or friends since.

Rai leaves behind a young family, including his wife, a son and a daughter as well as his parents and a brother who also lives in Canada and another brother who lives in India.

Funeral services for Rai, who belonged to village Khaan-Khaana in Punjab, are scheduled for Saturday, August 31 at 12:30 at Five Rivers Funeral Home in Delta. Prayers and Bhog will follow at Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Surrey at 2 p.m.
