LONDON – The number ofBritish women having lesbianencounters has quadrupled inthe last 20 years, according tothe largest-ever survey ofBritain’s sexual habits whichwas published on Tuesday.The National Survey of SexualAttitudes and Lifestyles, whichquizzed more than 15,000Britons about their sex lives,found that nearly eight percentof women had been withfemale partners, compared tojust 1.8 percent in 1990.In contrast, the number of menhaving gay sex has remainedmore stable over the same period,and now stands at 4.8 percentaccording to the findingspublished in the Lancet medicaljournal.Professor Kaye Wellings of theLondon School of Hygiene andTropical Medicine, which coranthe study, said there hadbeen a “remarkable” change inwomen’s sexual behaviour sincethe first survey two decades ago.”In some areas of sexual behaviourwe have seen a narrowingof the gender gap, but in otherswe have seen women overtakingmen in the diversity of theirbehaviour,” she said.The trends need to be seen”against the backdrop of theprofound changes in the positionof women in society, thenorms governing their lifestyles,and media representations offemale sexuality”, she added.
