NDP Organizes Day Of Action On Affordability

SURREY – While theConservatives continue toignore the financial needs ofCanadians, New DemocratMPs, Jinny Sims (Newton-North Delta) and Jasbir Sandhu(Surrey North), were talkingwith their neighbours about theNDP’s plan to make life moreaffordable. Their efforts werepart of a cross-country day ofaction on affordability.“In communities right acrossthe country, people were talkingwith their neighbours about realsolutions to help Canadians,”said NDP Leader Tom Mulcair.“It just doesn’t make any sensethat while family budgets arestretched to the breaking point,the Conservatives continue tosit on their hands.Over 15,000 Canadians joinedthe NDP campaign to make lifemore affordable. TheConservatives have rejectedNDP proposals to ease the burdenon families and also votedagainst an NDP motion to capATM fees.“On the door steps, we heardthe same question over and overagain: ‘Why does the governmentcontinue to give breaks tobanks and financial institutions,while average Canadians struggleto make ends meet?’, ”described SandhuMP Jinny Sims added, “Life inSurrey today is expensive andthese small charges everymonth, such as paying two dollarsto receive a paper copy ofyour phone bill, can add up tosignificant costs for families.”Following a day of conversationson the doorsteps of thepeople of Surrey, volunteersreported that people are feelingthe pinch from these unregulatedfees and are looking for moreconsumer protection.
