Ninderjit Singh Sentenced To Life In Prison

VANCOUVER — Ninderjit Singh, aka Ninderjit Soos, who executed his ex-girlfriend and then dumped her body in a Vancouver alley before escaping to California and trying to change his identity and appearance, has finally been sentenced to life in prison without chance of parole for 16 years.

Singh, who escaped justice for almost 12 years before he was eventually tracked down in California, pleaded guilty last month to the 1999 murder of 18-year-old Poonam Randhawa.

At his sentencing hearing last month, the court heard that in the moments before she was murdered, Randhawa told Singh that she wasn’t scared and that he should go ahead and shoot.

The court heard Singh killed the teen because he believed she was cheating on him and that he asked Randhawa for the truth or he would kill her.

Singh’s lawyer asked for the lowest possible sentence of 10 years before parole, while the Crown had asked for at least 17 years. But the judge settled for life with no parole for 16 years.

Last week, Singh had asked for mercy from the judge, asking that he be given a shorter sentence.

“I can’t bring (her) back,” Ninderjit Singh said. “I’m so sorry from the bottom of my heart. So please give me a chance.”

Singh pleaded guilty earlier this month to the second-degree murder of 18-year-old Randhawa, whose body was found discarded in an alley in a pile of shattered glass in January 1999, reported CTV news.

The then-21 years old, Singh fled the same day to California, where he grew a bushy beard, gained weight and lived under an alias until police hunted him down in August 2011 — just before he was to apparently get an operation to alter his fingerprints.

His defence lawyer told the judge that human nature and a “dysfunctional” upbringing triggered the young adult to gun down the teenager he believed was cheating on him.

“His motivation arose on the basis of all human emotions, jealousy and a desire to control others,” lawyer Russ Chamberlain told court.
