SANGRUR – Demanding release of dues of the last two years, farmers under the banner of the Ganna Sangharsh Committee blocked the Sangrur-Ludhiana road on the Babanpur canal bridge on Tuesday.

The farmers announced that their blockade would only be lifted after the release of the pending amount. Leader of the Opposition Harpal Singh Cheema said he would raise the issue in the Punjab Assembly on Wednesday and also personally take up the matter with the CM.

“The Dhuri sugar mill authorities are yet to release our dues to the tune of Rs 58.5 crore of which Rs 48 crore are of current financial year while the remaining are of last year. We have started a protest and will not end it without getting the pending amount,” said Dr Anwar Bhasaur, district general secretary, AAP.

The protesting organisations include the Kisan Mukti Morcha, Ganna Production Advisory Committee, BKU Rajewal, BKU Ugrahan, Indian Farmers’ Association, Kul Hind Kisan Sabha and Lok Sangharsh Committee.

“We have sold our crop to the mill authorities and are only demanding our money,” said Karnail Singh, a protesting farmer.

SDM Deepak Rohela said, “We are trying our best for the release of their payments at the earliest”.
