Rahul Gandhi was reinstated as a member of Lok Sabha on Monday after the Supreme Court relief given to him on his conviction in the Modi surname case.

Rahul Gandhi was reinstated as a Member of Parliament on Monday after the Lok Sabha secretariat issued a new order. The new order effectively withdraws the previous one that had led to Gandhi’s disqualification from his parliamentary position following his conviction in the ‘Modi surname’ case.

The developments follow the Supreme Court’s relief to Gandhi on Friday as it stayed his conviction in an interim order.

The earlier notification was issued on March 24, a day after Gandhi was convicted by a Surat court in Gujarat in the criminal defamation case dating back to 2019.

Rahul Gandhi to get his Delhi bungalow back

With setting his foot back in the Parliament a day ahead of the no-confidence motion debate against the Narendra Modi government, Gandhi will also get back his official residence in Delhi that was allotted to him as an MP. He earlier official residence was 12, Tughlaq Lane bungalow in the national capital since 2005.

He had vacated the residence on April 22, a month after his conviction, in which he was awarded a two-year sentence by the court. A punishment for two years and above automatically disqualifies a lawmaker. Following the disqualification, MPs are allowed to retain their official residences for a maximum period of one month.

After the former Congress chief had moved his belongings, the Congress party wrote on Twitter then, “This country is the home of Rahul Gandhi. Rahul who resides in the hearts of people. Rahul whose relation with the public is unbreakable. Some see in him their son, some brother, some their leader… Rahul belongs to everyone and everyone belongs to Rahul. This is the reason why today the country is saying- Rahul ji, my house-your house. #MeraGharAapkaGhar.”

Today, following the new order, the party tweeted “Parliament membership of Rahul Gandhi ji has been restored. This is the victory of truth, the victory of the people of India. Happy moment.” It also shared a video of the party president Mallikarjun Kharge and other leaders celebrating the news and sharing sweets at the Opposition bloc’s meeting in Parliament.
