CHANDIGARH – The state Assembly today passed a resolution asking the state government to seek transfer of Chandigarh and other Punjabi-speaking areas to Punjab.

The government has raised the issue of Chandigarh, the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, several times ever since the BJP came to power in the neighbouring state.

Moved by Akali MLAs Iqbal Singh Jhundan, Darshan Singh Kotfatta, Darshan Singh Shivalik and SR Kler, the resolution was supported by senior BJP leader and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Madan Mohan Mittal. The resolution was moved at the fag end of the session when the Congress was not present in the House.

Mittal said transfer of Chandigarh was a topic that did not need any discussion. He said “all were in its favour”.
