Former gurdwara president addresses gathering
Vancouver: The opposition group fighting the upcoming Ross Gurdwara election on September 10 held a public rally on Sunday, August 21 to a standing-room only crowd at South Hall in Vancouver. According to reports, the banquet hall overflowed to the extent that supporters were left standing outside, as far as the lobby.
Former Ross Gurdwara President Gurdev Johal, explained that the time for crucial change is now. He explained that he handpicked the Sikh Sangat slate and its President, Mr. Joga Singh Sangha. Sangha and his entire 15-member strong slate has vowed to keep tables and chairs at Ross Street langar hall intact.
“I fought for this issue and went to India and I personally guarantee to each and every one of you that it will not change. The tables and chairs will remain as they are,” said Johal. “We need to elect Joga Singh and his slate because they will work hard and have financial transparency while delivering great programs.”
Johal explained that in 1997, when the edict of tables and chairs was issued, he and other leaders went to India and met with the head (Jathedar) of the Akal Takht, Bhai Ranjit Singh. He personally asked the Jathedar to visit Vancouver or send a delegation that could investigate and address the wishes of the local Sangat.
Various speakers took part including Sikh Sangat candidates and high school teacher Iqbal S. Sandhu and counselor Navjeet K. Randhawa. Both stressed the need to engage the youth and to provide counseling from the Gurdwara on several issues for families, youth and women.
Cheema promised, as the Treasurer if elected, to post monthly golak donations online and at the Gurdwara. “It is your right to access this information and no one should have to go to court for it”.
The gathering echoed the need for change. Attendees were bolstered by fresh faces and new ideas. They explained their campaign as a “new beginning.”
