Saragarhi Day Celebration: Honoring the Legacy of Courage and Sacrifice

SURREY:  On September 12th, 2023, the Saragarhi Foundation Inc. marked a poignant moment in history by commemorating Saragarhi Day at the serene surroundings of Gurdwara Dukh Nivaran Sahib Surrey B.C,

The event saw a vibrant assembly of individuals coming together to pay tribute to the indomitable spirit and valor of the 21 soldiers of the 36 Sikh Regiment who displayed unwavering courage during the historic Battle of Saragarhi in 1897.

The Battle of Saragarhi, a defining chapter in history, is celebrated for the sheer bravery exhibited by these 21 soldiers who defended the Saragarhi post against an overwhelming Afghan force of over 10,000.

These valiant soldiers managed to eliminate more than 600 Afghan attackers before succumbing to enemy bullets. This remarkable feat of heroism took place in the Tirah region of the North-West Frontier Province, now part of Pakistan, and served as a vital link between the British India forts of Lockhart and Gulistan.

Present at the event were distinguished guests including Bhai Pinder Pal Singh, Narinder Singh Walia, President of Gurdwara Dukh Nivaran Surrey BC and the founder of Guru Nanak Food Bank, Jatinder Jay Minhas, Vice President of Saragarhi Foundation Inc., Anup Singh Loodu, Bhai Hajinder Singh SriNagar, and, notably, Rashpal Singh Gill, the Great Grandson of Ishar Singh, a revered leader of the Saragarhi Battle.

One of the highlights of the event was an educational exhibition that captivated the audience, especially the children in attendance. The exhibition vividly depicted the heroic saga of the Battle of Saragarhi, instilling a sense of pride and reverence for this historical event in the young minds.

Jatinder Jay Minhas and Narinder Singh Walia took the opportunity to earnestly request the Education Minister and School District to consider incorporating the Battle of Saragarhi as a dedicated chapter in school curricula.

They emphasized that this significant battle deserves a prominent place in the education system, as it serves as a shining example of courage and sacrifice in the face of adversity.
