SUVA – The SDL party now agrees that race based voting should be eliminated from Fiji’s electoral system.

SDL leader Laisenia Qarase said the one man-one vote system is widely used around the world and they will make it known that they accept the system during their Constitutional Commission submission.

Qarase said their submission will include the recommendation to reconvene the last elected parliament, make electoral changes to the 1997 constitution and hold elections under the revised constitution.

Meanwhile, Qarase disagreed with Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum’s comments that they are only a group of politicians trying to hold on to power and frightened that 18-year-olds will be allowed to vote in 2014.

Qarase said the SDL, Fiji Labour Party, National Federation Party and United People’s Party are expected to reach common ground on a number of issues before the Constitutional Commission sits next month.
