AMRITSAR – Tension prevailed in the city when activists of radical Sikh outfits and rightwing Hindu fanatics of Shiv Sena came face to face when the latter tried to burn the effigy of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale on his birth anniversary.

The trouble broke out when activists of outfits like Shiv Sena Sher-E-Punjab and Karan Sena came out to burn Bhindranwale’s effigy at Hall Gate while another was to be burnt at Hathi Gate.

Damdami Taksal (Ajnala) leader Bhai Amrik Singh Ajnala descended on the scene along with his supporters just when the Shiv Sena activists were to set the effigy ablaze.

The police too arrived at the spot and warned Shiv Sena workers against burning the effigy. The police swung into action and averted a possible clash between the Taksal and Sena activists by detaining their activists.

On the other hand, Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh flayed the detention of Sikh activists. He said the police must act against those who were trying to humiliate the “martyrs”.
