Sikh Hockey Team Comedy Breakaway Highest Grossing English Canadian Film In 2011

TORONTO  Producers Ajay Virmani and Pauline Dhillon and lead actor Vinay Virmani and distributor Alliance Films announced that the Sikh hockey team comedy Breakaway, also  featuring  Hollywood’s Rob Lowe and Bollywood’s Akshay Kumar as well comedian Russell Peters, is the highest grossing English language Canadian film for 2011.

“This accomplishment is due to your [Media] great efforts and belief in our project.  Without you  Breakaway would not have been the success it is,” Virmani and Dhillon said in a press release.

“We thank you once again for your commitment to Breakaway and do look forward to working with you in the future.”

Distributor Alliance in a separate letter highlighted the success of Breakaway and how it has compared to other films in its genre.

The film grossed a total o f 1,881,972 with an opening weekend gross of $546,886. This figure is far ahead of the highest grossing Bollywood film Three Idiots which had a final gross in Canada of $1,124,679. But the final figure of Breakaway is far less than other English language Canadian films from years earlier.
