SURREY: The Sikh Motorcycle Club of Canada is set to ride over 10,000 kilometres across the country through their Ride For Cause… Let’s End Diabetes, with the goal to raise $100,000 to ensure Diabetes Canada’s research can continue.

On July 31st, 2022, the Sikh Motorcycle Club of Canada inviting everyone to join at the starting line as they host Ride For Cause… Let’s End Diabetes, a national motorcycle ride with support of other motorcycle clubs across Canada to inspire Canadians to raise awareness and funds to help support the work led by Diabetes Canada to help End Diabetes.

There’s been many advancements since the Canadian discovery of insulin over 100 years ago. But there is still no cure and diabetes isn’t slowing down. Diabetes continues to affect more Canadians than ever before with 1 in 3 living with or at risk of diabetes or prediabetes and 1 in 2 young adults will develop type 2 diabetes in their lifetime.

Even with the help of insulin over the past 100 years, diabetes is successful at slowly shutting down your body one part at a time. Whether it be causing blindness, a heart attack, stroke, or kidney failure, diabetes continues to take a toll.

Diabetes is successful at outrunning us all. That’s why each year Diabetes Canada funds 20 End Diabetes research awards. Each award commits a $100,000 grant annually for three years to support researchers on the road to breakthrough discoveries to help end diabetes.

The Sikh Motorcycle Club of Canada has been supporting the “End Diabetes Fund” which supports research to enhance our understanding of diabetes and its prevention, causes, management, and cure. Since 2019, the Sikh Motorcycle Clubs across Canada have helped raise over $150,000 towards programs and services for those affected by diabetes.

“Diabetes Canada is grateful for the commitment and support of the Sikh Motorcycle Club of Canada and the riders here in British Columbia.  These types of partnerships and events allow us to further support the 1.6 million individuals living with diabetes, prediabetes or undiagnosed in British Columbia,” expresses Andrea Kwasnicki, Director, Community Fundraising and Events, Diabetes Canada, Western Canada.

We invite media to attend or encourage a scheduled interview and look forward to seeing you at either the starting line or finish line.

Established in 2002, club came into existence due to the former efforts of Mr. Avtar Sing Dhillon, who on July 7th 1999, after many years of campaigning and educating governmental organizations, earned the right for practising Sikhs who wear Turban to be exempt from mandatory Helmet Laws in the Province of British Columbia while riding a motorcycle. Since then the club has continued to grow. With basic principle of promoting safe and enjoyable motorcycle riding, SMC has been involved in many volunteer efforts to support community.

This year they are inviting everyone to ride for a cause.

The ride will begin Sunday, July 31, 2022 from Gurdwara Baba Banda Singh Bahadar Sikh Society 31631 South Fraser Way, Abbotsford, BC V2T 1T8  at 9:00 am and finish at Gurdwara Dukh Nivaran Sahib, 15255 68 Avenue, Surrey, BC  V3S 3L5 by 3 PM.
