ST. CATHARINES  – A 67-year-old woman is dead after being struck by a pick-up truck, allegedly driven by a South Asian man, early Saturday in Ontario.

Police have a Brampton, Ont., driver in custody who they allege was impaired and speeding when he hit the woman, took off, crashed and ran away to hide, reported QMI Agency news.

Pirasath Aiyathurai, 30, of Brampton was charged with criminal negligence causing death, impaired driving causing death, flight from police, failing to remain at the scene of an accident and driving while disqualified.

Det. Sgt. Shane Donovan said the truck was first spotted on the QEW just after 4 a.m. Saturday by someone who notified Ontario Provincial Police of a possible impaired driver.

The caller said a 2012 Dodge pickup truck was being driven erratically at a very high rate of speed.

An OPP officer located the truck and stopped it on Hwy 406. But when the officer approached the truck, the driver sped off.

The OPP pursued the truck for a short distance but abandoned the pursuit for safety reasons because of the speeds. The OPP officer lost sight of the truck when it left the highway.

Soon after, Niagara Regional Police received a 911 call at 4:10 a.m. after a woman had been hit by a truck.

Witnesses told police after hitting the woman, the driver reversed the truck and drove away, but struck a tree.

They said the driver got out of the truck and ran away without helping the woman he hit. He was located hiding in a backyard after an hour-long police search with the canine unit.

The woman’s name has not been released.
