SURREY – The next South Asian Health Expo will be taking place on Sunday, June 5th from 12pm to 5pm at Surrey City Hall. There is FREE admission for the entire community. There will be a variety of vendors on-site from the health, wellness and fitness industry. This particular Expo will focus on youth and young adults in our community. An exciting aspect to the Expo this year are the local charity 3 on 3 basketball games which will take place in the outside Plaza area of Surrey City Hall at approximately 2:00pm along with a fitness skills competition and half time show featuring local artists.

This initiative will raise funds for 2 well connected non-profit community organizations: South Asian Arts Society and Sahara Foundation.

“We’re very excited to be working with the South Asian Health Expo. This year’s initiative goes hand-in-hand with the youth work we do and getting young people thinking about their health now is key to a long, healthy & active life. Also, we are an organization with strong family values and we teach in a safe and positive environment. Exercise is a byproduct of many of our programs.” – Gurp Sian and Rayman Bhuller from South Asian Arts Society

“Sahaara Foundation for Mental Health was founded to help create awareness and funding towards mental health issues in the community.

Mental health problems are prevalent in our community but due to the stigma attached to this topic, they are often not attended to. Youth workshops will be one of our priorities as mental health issues can begin at a young age and its in everyone’s best interest to address it early on.” – Bindi Bains Mackoruk, Sahaara Foundation

“I believe both South Asian Arts Society and Sahaara Foundation are great organizations to work with on the Youth Edition of the SA Health Expo. They will be using the money we raise specifically towards facilitating more youth focused bhangra dance/dhol programs and mental health workshops, purchasing equipment and providing youth education scholarships. All of us will be utilizing our networks and contacts within the community to garner the support we need to help our youth as we are clearly dealing with and witnessing the dangers of them going down the wrong path and getting involved with gang activity and drugs.

The Expo on June 5th will focus on the health and well-being (mentally, emotionally and physically) of our youth, as well as provide them with job opportunities to keep them busy throughout the Summer. We have a responsibility to guide our youth in the right direction and provide them with the necessary skills, support and resources to lead successful lives.” – Rina Gill, Organizer of the SA Health Expo

The South Asian Health Expo launched in 2011 and continues to focus on educating the SA community (all age groups) on how to be proactive and manage medical conditions they are predisposed to, as well as providing a broad range of expert resources, products and services from the health, wellness and fitness industry.

Stay tuned for more exciting announcements next week.
