Speedy Thrill Ends In Tragedy

LABASA – An alleged car race through the streets of a Northern town resulted in the death of a young man at the weeken.

Police said the deceased was speeding through Naseakula Road in Labasa when his vehicle smashed into a Fiji Electricity Authority post.

The concrete post broke into two from the impact and caused a power blackout in parts of Naseakula at about 10pm on Saturday.

Dead is Kunal Chand, 22, of Vunivau in Labasa, an employee of Asco Motors service station.

Chand was trapped inside the mangled wreck of his Nissan Cefiro vehicle for some time before police officers and firefighters freed him.

A 20-year old passenger in the vehicle suffered serious injuries and is recovering at the Labasa Hospital.

Police spokesman Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri said the deceased was speeding when he lost control of his vehicle and bumped the FEA post.

“It is alleged that the deceased was racing with another vehicle when the accident happened,” he said.
