In support of “BC Youth Week (May 1-7), the Surrey RCMP is proud to connect with youth in Surrey on a variety of proactive and engaging projects. The Surrey RCMP’s Youth Unit has been involved in a number of programs where youth are the central focus and mentorships with police officers are often developed. Whether it’s through the highly successful WRAP Around Program, popular Youth Police Academy, physically challenging Code Blue program, or the early diversion Youth Intervention Program, officers within the unit have helped facilitate many programs that provide young people with an opportunity for positive interactions with police. The Youth Unit is in a unique position to model and promote pro-social behaviour in young people as they are a proactive unit focused on prevention, intervention, and education. “The Surrey RCMP’s involvement in Surrey Schools’ Big Brothers program makes a huge difference,” says Mike Lally, Surrey School District, Community–Schools Partnership Coordinator. “The officers’ interactions with students helps these young people see how positive and supportive the officers can be. The members are great mentors and role models.”
