SURREY – Running for the first time as president, veteran insurance man and businessman Satish Kumar said his slate of young people should be elected cause they have done the most work in building up Surrey’s Laxmi Narayan Hindu mandir.

The election takes place this Sunday, Oct. 5 with voting times from 8 am to 5 pm.

Previously a council member, Kumar said his group has been instrumental in doing the construction of the temple located at the edge of Bear Creek park as well as many improvements in recent years including work on dome of the temple, shiv mandir, expanded shantineketan  and upgrading the bathrooms.

“When our group took over – the revenue was $350,000 and now the revenue is $850,000 a year,” Kumar told the LINK on Thursday. “Before not many people use to come and now it has increased a lot. We have increased attendance by bringing in celebrations like Diwali, Shivratri, Janamastmi, Dushera and India Day celebrations.”

Kumar said his group completed a lot of things that were incomplete and are asking the congregation to elect them to continue to improve the temple, including settling the parking issue with the city of Surrey.

There have been some members who have been using the temple for their own purposes but Kumar said he is one person who stands only for the betterment of the temple and he said anybody will try to use or damage the temple from inside or outside, he will fight against them.
