VANCOUVER – The plazas surrounding the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Moberly Arts and Cultural Centre will soon be equipped with public wifi, as the City of Vancouver continues to deliver on its #VanWifi project.

The third phase of the #VanWifi network expansion will be delivered by TELUS. The company will use the latest technology to fully integrate wifi in the plazas and improve indoor cellular coverage at the Moberly Arts and Cultural Centre.

The #VanWifi project previously saw the delivery of free public wifi at 42 community centres and other civic facilities, completed by TELUS. Phase two, carried out by Shaw, encompassed outdoor City locations, social housing, and 136 Mobi by Shaw Go bike stations.

“This project allows us to expand our digital reach and further connect people in our public spaces,” said Chief Technology Officer Jessie Adcock. “Public and private partnerships, like these with TELUS and Shaw Communications, are essential to evolve as a city and improve and expand our digital infrastructure.”

The City of Vancouver is grateful to both partners for increasing connectivity and accessibility in our communities, allowing Vancouver to be one of the largest free public WiFi providers in North America.

The deployment of #VanWifi is free and has no cost to the City of Vancouver.

The project is a key pillar in the City of Vancouver’s Digital Strategy.<https://vancouver.ca/your-government/digital-strategy.aspx> The City of Vancouver and TELUS are targeting 2020 completion of phase three.

There are currently 768 free public wifi locations in Vancouver.
