JALANDHAR – Two inmates Ravi Kumar (25) of Kapurthala and Tarun Kumar (40) of Bada pind near Goraya today allegedly committed suicide inside the Kapurthala Modern Jail.

Ravi’s family claimed that he had been murdered. They held a protest outside the Kapurthala Civil Hospital. While Ravi was arrested on May 12 in a theft case, Tarun was arrested under the NDPS Act on April 14.

Ashish Choudhary, Senior Superintendent of Police, Kapurthala, claimed both Ravi and Tarun hanged themselves with an exhaust fan in their respective cells. The same method followed by both inmates with in a gap of six hours points to serious negligence on part of the jail authorities.

Jail officials said both were drug addicts and were admitted to the drug de-addiction centre inside the jail. Both were under depression, they claimed.

Ravi’s family slammed the jail authorities for “negligence”. The police have marked a magisterial inquiry in both cases.

The two deaths have raised the toll inside the Kapurthala jail to 47 in the last one year.
