VANCOUVER – Two young Indo-Canadian men have been charged in connection with Vancouver’s first homicide of the year.

The police pointed out that the pair is not linked to gangs and neither of them have a criminal record.

Twenty-year-old Amritpal Dhillon has been charged with second-degree murder and 18-year-old Amritpaul Rakhra has been charged with manslaughter, reported CTV news.

Nineteen-year-old Manraj Akalirai was killed on January 23rd on Elgin Street near East 47th Avenue.

Inspector Laurence Rankin says they’ve spoken to the victim’s family.  “They’re relieved.  There is some measure of comfort.  It won’t bring their son back but they know we’ve exhausted every investigative avenue at this time.”

He says the know the motive but they won’t release any details.  “Two groups of individuals… there was an issue between them and as a result of that issue a conflict unfolded which lead to the death of Mr. Akalirai.”

Akalirai, a Vancouver resident, was allegedly swarmed on Elgin Street near 47th Avenue by a group of men who viciously attacked him and left him dying in the middle of the road.

He survived long enough to be loaded into an ambulance but died en route to the hospital, according to police.

Authorities said at the time Akalirai was found with “severe injuries believed to be caused by a sword,” but on Thursday, police wouldn’t confirm which weapons were used in the attack.

Police said two groups were involved in the altercation and investigators identified several persons of interest.

Dhillon and Rakhra remained in custody ahead of a court appearance late Wednesday.

Akalirai’s death was Vancouver’s first homicide of 2013.
