UFV Wrestler Jaskarn Ranu Wins Junior Nationals Gold!

UFV Wrestling coaches Arjan Bhullar andRaj Virdi were in Edmonton over the weekend,witnessing Cascades Wrestling Clubmember Jaskarn Ranu’s meteoric ascent tothe top of the national podium at theCanadian Junior (U21) NationalChampionships. Ranu took the gold medalin the 74 kg division, and has now qualifiedto represent Team Canada in the upcominginternational season.“Jaskarn competed as part of the CascadesWrestling Club this year, as we prepared tojoin the basketball and soccer programs inthe CIS next year,” said Bhullar.“It is extremely rare for a brand new programlike ours to produce a national champion,but this achievement is really a testamentto Jaskarn’s abilities as an athlete. Mygoal is to continue this success as a program,and have a banner season nextyear in the CIS. With the recruitingclass we are expecting, I am confidentthat we will be a force to be reckonedwith.”Ranu won four matches on his way tothe gold medal, eking out a win in thefinals against SFU wrestler ReidWatkins. Although Ranu was losingwith less than 30 seconds left in thematch, he pulled off a dramatic lastminutetakedown to tie the score at 6-6.If a match ends with a tie, the wrestlerwith the last takedown wins, meaningthat Ranu emerged victorious.Ranu is currently pursuing a degree inUFV’s Bachelor of Business
