VANCOUVER – VisionVancouver Park Board ChairNiki Sharma will seek a seat onCity Council in November’s civicelection. The 34 year old lawyerwas first elected Parkboard chair back in2011. Sharma, whocurrently chairs theboard, confirmedrecently that she willseek a nominationfrom her party to runfor council. “As a newmom of a five-monthold girl, I often thinkabout the kind of cityVancouver will be for her whenshe grows up,” Sharma said in anews release Wednesday. “Howwill the air and water quality be?Will she be able to afford to livehere? How will she get around?Poverty, childcare, climatechange, violence against women,transportation, livability andsocial justice: these are globalissues that I believe wemust act locally toaddress, and this is theperspective I want tobring to City Council.”According to the release,school board chair PattiBacchus and councillorsGeoff Meggs and AndreaReimer, who are also withVision, are backing hercouncil candidacy.Sharma is a lawyer with the firmDonovan & Company and practisesaboriginal law. She’s also onthe board of Battered WomenSupport Services.
