SURREY- On December 21, 2012 at approximately 12:20am Surrey RCMP responded to a report of shots fired in the 12700 block of 63rd Avenue. A woman was shot in front of her 10-year-old son in Surrey early Friday by a man who later shot himself in the head.

The RCMP say the woman arrived home with the boy just after midnight when they were met in a carport by a masked man.

“A brief verbal exchange occurred and neighbours reported hearing up to six shots being fired,” said Insp. Dan Splinter. “The woman was hit once in the wrist and once in the shoulder.”

She was taken to hospital, while her son was not hurt. About a half hour later, a Mountie pulled over a van in Surrey and obtained the driver’s identification and other documents.

“Our member was checking this information on his computer in his car and when he went back to talk to the driver, on his way up to the vehicle, he heard a gunshot. The driver had shot himself in the head,” Splinter said.

He was taken to hospital and it’s not clear if he will survive.

The Independent Investigations Office has been called in because it investigates deaths or serious injuries in which a police officer is involved.
