SUVA – AUSAID will double its aid to Fiji from $33.7 million (A$18.6 million) to $65.6 million (A$36 million) from next month.

AUSAID director general Peter Baxter announced this during a visit to the Lami Health Centre.

He said this funding would help Fiji’s most vulnerable communities.

Australia will support Fiji’s Ministry of Health to strengthen primary health services and increase childhood immunisation to ensure rates stay above 90 per cent, Baxter said.

Work is underway to see that more beds and facilities are available to pregnant women and mothers for better pre and post natal care.

Baxter met with the Permanent Secretary for Health this week and spoke about providing more health care to women and children.

He said their goal is to increase clinic attendance of pregnant women and increase immunization on children.
