BC Hits A New Low With Loss Of 8200 Jobs

In the past year, B.C. has lost 15,500 jobs while the working age population hasgrown by 43,300. Since the jobs plan was launched more than two years ago,B.C. has lost 6,700 private sector jobs, the worst record in the country and theonly province to have suffered an absolute decline.

VICTORIA — As British Columbiacontinues to lose jobs, the province’semployment rate dipped to the lowestit’s been in over 10 years last month.The dismal numbers demonstrateonce again that the Liberal jobs planhas been a failure, say NewDemocrats.“British Columbia lost a total of8,200 jobs between September andOctober, including 4,500 full-timejobs, according to today’s jobsreport,” said New Democrat financecritic Mike Farnworth. “Even FinanceMinister Mike de Jong knows thisjobs plan isn’t working. Wecan’t do this without an investment inskills training and post-secondary programs.Sadly, the B.C. Liberals have donethe opposite, dismantling our apprenticeshipsystem in 2002 and doing little to putit back together, and cutting post-secondaryspaces.”
