NEWTOWN – The Fiji Police Force is urging members of the public to show more understanding towards others, particularly children. Police made the request after a young boy of Newtown settlement hung himself on Saturday evening.

The boy was 10-years-old and a Class Five student. This has sparked concerns with the police force, which is pleading with people to show more compassion towards each other.

“While we are still trying to get more details about the incident, all we can say is that everyone needs to be more understanding and take time to consider each other’s needs,” said police spokeswoman, Ana Naisoro.

“What might seem insignificant to us could have more meaning to another, especially when it comes to dealing with children. “What we might consider unimportant might be different through the eyes of a child.”

Naisoro said the boy’s body was discovered between 8pm and 9pm on Saturday. Police believe the boy asked his mother for $2 to buy biscuits but his request was refused.

However, police investigations into the boy’s death are being carried out. Four suicide cases and eight attempted suicides have been recorded by police so far this year.
