LABASA – Commercial bank Westpac Banking Corporation has sacked some of its Labasa staff following the outcome of an internal investigation conducted into regularities at its northern branch.

Westpac Fiji general manager Jason Stephens confirmed that less than half of its 11-member team in the north were terminated.

He said the Labasa incident was an issue of operational risk and compliance.

“We have reviewed post Labasa. We have looked at all of the policies and procedures to ensure that we do not put any staff at risk or any customer at risk,” Mr Stephens said.

“But the one thing I can say about the Labasa incident is that no customers’ money was affected. Whatever happened there happened through our own internal processes, no customer has been affected so no customer has lost money,” he said.

He said those staff that were suspended were subjected to an internal investigation. “Coming out of that was various responses and a small number were terminated,” Mr Stephens said.

“I can’t talk anymore on that because now it is in the hands of police,” he said. However, Stephens said the other staff had returned to work.
