SUVA – The Suva High Court today ruled for a 61-year-old former Fiji citizen to be surrendered to the United States for trial on alleged defrauding of the Nevada State of some US$9 million.

Aneal Maharaj escaped from United States to Fiji earlier this year.

Judge Justice Denial Goundar ruled that as far as the extradition proceeding is concerned, there is no evidence of abuse of process by the authorities in Fiji or the United States, to justify a stay therefore his stay was refused.

Maharaj’s lawyer Anand Singh had filed an application for stay. Accordingly, Judge Goundar issued a surrender warrant for Maharaj. The alleged offences were committed between 1995 and 2004.
