SURREY – An elderly Indo-Canadian man has died from his injuries after being hit by a pick-up truck.

At just after 9 a.m. Thursday, the 84-year-old victim was crossing 96 Avenue when a red Ford 150 pickup truck, that had just exited a parking lot and was going westbound on 96th Avenue towards Scott Road, struck the elderly Indo-Canadian as he was crossing 96th Avenue.

First indications revealed that the victim was not in a crosswalk at the time.

The senior suffered head injuries and was taken to hospital where he later passed away from his injuries, police said.

The 65 year old driver remained at the scene and was cooperative with the investigators. Although the impact occurred at slow speed, the victim fell, hitting his head on the pavement.

“As we approach months of dark and wet road conditions, it is imperative that everyone who shares the roads, pedestrians and motorists alike, remain aware of their surroundings,” says Surrey RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet. “If you are a pedestrian, please take the extra time to find a safe crosswalk and be as visible as possible.”

Police are describing it as a “slow-speed” accident, and they note that drugs or alcohol are not believed to be factors.

The driver remained at the scene.

However,  police say it is too early in the investigation to say with certainty whether the 65-year-old driver of the truck will be charged.

Scott Road and 96 Avenue was shut down for about four hours while traffic investigators combed through the scene.
