SUVA – A former Fiji national was stabbed to death in his apartment at a suburb outside Wellington City in New Zealand on Tuesday night.

Dead is 30-year-old Vashaun Varma whom Hutt Valley Police say was still conscious when police and the ambulance arrived at the Petone Flat in Lower Hutt.

It has been confirmed that Varma received one stab wound to his chest.

When this edition went to press last night, Hutt Valley Police spokesman Nicholas Bohm told this newspaper that a post-mortem examination was still in progress at the Wellington Hospital.

He said police and the ambulance received a call about 10.30pm with a report that a 30-year-old man had been stabbed and was being helped by a friend.

“There was a period he was still alive while people were trying to help him,” Mr Bohm said. “We are interviewing a 29-year-old woman at this stage. She was also at the scene,” he said.

“Right now, we are talking to the neighbours and to people in the area to tell us what happened that night. We would like to encourage people in that area who have information to come forward,” Mr Bohm said.

He also confirmed that the parents of the deceased lived nearby their son’s place.
