MUKTSAR – Rural Medical Officers (RMOs) deputed at the Suwidha Centre in the District Administrative Complex (DAC) here are issuing medical fitness certificates without conducting a check-up. The district administration had deputed RMOs here in order to provide health services at the Suwidha Centre. The RMOs, however, are not provided with any equipment, so they hand out certificates without conducting a check-up.

The administration got the idea from Jalandhar Deputy Commissioner Kamal Kishore Yadav, who had deputed doctors at Suwidha Centre in Jalandhar district. The doctors there conducted medical check-up of applicants. At the local Suwidha Centre, a special counter has been set up for the medical officer and those who want to get a medical fitness certificate are charged Rs 50. However, the local administration has failed to provide the doctors with the necessary equipment to check eyesight, colour blindness and blood group. On an average, 8-10 people are getting medical fitness certificates.

Rajiv Gupta, in charge, Suwidha Centre, said, “We hope to get the equipment in a day or two. The Health Department has also been requested to depute a laboratory technician, who can test blood groups, at the Suwidha Centre.”

From August 10, the district administration is planning to make it mandatory for everyone to get medical fitness certificates from the Suwidha Centre. At present, people can get these certificates from any doctor.
