Big Bundle Of Trouble For Identity Thief Victim!

By ALAN SAMUEL

One innocent guy gets taken to the cleaners big time in Identity Thief, a smart laugh a minute comedy from Universal Pictures now turning folks on at the  Park Theatre, Empire Studio 12, Colossus and Famous Players Cineplex odeon Theatres across B.C.

Innocence goes out the window when mild-mannered Sandy Peterson learns that someone has been charging lots of money to his credit card.  All around nice guy Jason Bateman is in fine control as the shlob who decides to take it upon himself to find out whose been taking advantage of him.  Apparently another person has gotten his name and facts about his life and is having the time of her life – at his expense.

Fresh from her wacky turn on Bridesmaids is Melissa McCarthy who is just as insane as Diane, a mystery woman who somehow has latched onto Sandy’s identity.  Few people believe that he’s innocent but over time the real Sandy decides to expose this fraud.  Trouble comes every step of the way on this quest for justice and redemption.

A strong secondary cast sets this 112 minute into overdrive ad the gags keep piling on.  Together Bateman and McCarthy are simply delicious as the awkward couple who must “bond” when they finally meet up. It’s not a pretty sight to behold.   Other interested bystanders in this journey include Morris Chestnut as a by the book lawman, Robert Patrick as a hit man for hire, Amanda Peet as a loving wife and John Cho as a partner of Sandy and Jon Favreau as a sleazy boss.

Lots of exposure of raunch antics furthers ups the tempo in one of the wildest farces in years.  If outrageous humour is your thing consider Identity Thief to be in a class all to itself.
