Dhruba Ghosh (sarangi) and Harrie Starreveld (shakuhachi) explore the ragas and modes of Indian, Japanese and Persian music, with Reza Honari (kamanche) and Niel Golden (tabla).

VANCOUVER – The Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra is presenting a major concert series featuring world-renowned virtuosos appearing in Vancouver for the first time: Dhruba Ghosh from Mumbai, and Harrie Starreveld (Shakuhachi) from Amsterdam.

Both Ghosh and Starreveld are appearing in Vancouver for the first time ever. Through the events of The Longing Sky series, audiences have the chance to see and hear them perform as soloists, in small ensembles, and with the full 21-piece intercultural orchestra.

There will be music in the centuries-old traditions of India, Japan, China and the Middle East, alongside brand new compositions by local composers that intertwine all these strands into new and beautiful tapestries of sound…music that truly reflects the amazing diversity of the world we live in.

The ticketed concerts, recitals and free workshops, slated for November 18 – 23 at various, will culminate in the world premiere of Vancouver composer Moshe Denburg’s double concerto for sarangi, shakuhachi and intercultural orchestra.

The 21-piece VICO, with Ghosh and Starreveld, performs the world premiere of The Longing Sky, a double concerto by Moshe Denburg for solo sarangi and shakuhachi with intercultural orchestra (violin, viola, cello, bass, gaohu, erhu, zhonghu, kamanche, tar, santur, ruan/daruan, tabla, tambura and hand percussion). Also on the bill: the Canadian premiere of Peony Dreams by Lan Tung, and an arrangement of George Harrison’s Within You and Without You by Mark Armanini.

The Longing Sky series furthers the VICO’s continuing quest to develop and present new fusion music on a global scale, and to create opportunities for many listeners to see and hear music that truly reflects the amazing diversity of our city, our province and our country.
