RA – The emergence of a new cult in the interior of Ra has raised fresh concerns despite numerous attempts to put a stop to these illegal practices two years ago.

The latest development involves the death of a man early this year.

It is claimed that the deceased was not allowed to visit the hospital despite being ill for few days.

Ra provincial administrator Sitiveni Tavaga maintained that cult practices were still alive in some remote settlements in Ra.

“The government integrated team in Ra was alerted on this issue after a member of the cult group died and was not allowed to be taken to hospital despite being ill for many days,” he said.

“This is a new cult group where members were not allowed to send their kids to schools and those that are sick are not allowed to go to the hospital. They say this is part of their religious beliefs.

“This new cult group doesn’t even have a name.”

Ra Provincial Council chairman Ratu Meli Bolobolo said the matter was discussed by the council and the chiefs of Ra were doing their best to put a stop to these practices.

“We have received complaints from chiefs and villagers about this practice and we are working with the office of the Ra provincial administrator and other government departments in Ra to deal with the matter,” he said.

“This is a matter of concern especially when innocent children are denied the opportunity to attend school because of their religious beliefs.

“The council will support the government in its effort to stop these illegal practices.”
