VANCOUVER – A section of thePunjabi-Canadian diaspora has urged theruling Shiromani Akali Dalto allot a Lok Sabha ticketto senior human rightslawyer HS Phoolka in thelarger interest of the community.The demand hascome after there werereports that he was beingfielded as an Aam AadmiParty candidate fromPunjab in the forthcomingparliamentary elections.These NRIs said just as theAkali Dal had left theJalandhar Lok Sabha seatvacant in support of former PrimeMinister Late IK Gujral in the 1998 electionsfor waving off the UnionGovernment loan given tothe state for fighting militancy,this time the partyshould help Phoolka, whohas been fighting for justiceto the victims of the1984-anti Sikh riots. WorldSikh Organisation directorKulmit Singh Sangha fromCalgary said, “Not only theAkali Dal, but other politicalparties of Punjabshould unanimously supporthis candidature forthe sake of justice andhuman rights.’’
