Shocked Son In Tears After Seeing Drowned Dad’s Body

LABASA – A young man tried hard to fight back tears on the banks of Labasa River as he waited to look at his father’s body that was found in a fishing boat early yesterday morning.

Ronal Krishneel was still in shock over the death of his father, Kumar Sami, 53, as a crowd gathered at the riverside where police officers were investigating the death.

Police spokesman Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri confirmed the find to The Fiji Times.

“The body was discovered by three boys who were part of a church camping group early this (yesterday) morning,” Insp Sokomuri said.

“The body was discovered inside the fishing boat with serious injuries to the deceased’s head. We are waiting for the postmortem (examination) report to find out the cause of death.”

Witnesses told this newspaper the deceased was seen by Labasa market vendors moving his fishing boat, belonging to Northern Ice Plant, out towards the river mouth in the early hours of yesterday morning.

“It was still dark when he (deceased) was seen moving his boat out the river,” a witness who wished not to be named told this newspaper.

Krishneel, upon hearing the news, rushed from their home in Namara to the river.
