“I Will Keep My Identity”, Says Supninder Singh Khehra!

Quebec City police said two men were arrested. One was let go without a charge. The other, a 22-year-old, faces charges of assault and uttering threats to a police officer. Police say they are still investigating and that other charges are possible.

QUEBEC – A Toronto-area Sikh-Canadian man says he is still “proud” to be a Canadian and a Sikh, despite an attack while visiting Quebec City that left him with a sore back and a black eye.

Supninder Singh Khehra says he is still recovering after he was punched in the face and kicked in the head by three assailants last Saturday night.

Khehra had been out with friends after dark, when three men started shouting at him from a car across the street. The men pointed at Khehra’s turban and spoke mostly in French, “but they were using certain English words as well,” Khehra told CTV Toronto.

Video of the incident shows Khehra turning to ignore their verbal insults, at which point they followed him in their car and got out to attack him physically.

“One of the guys punched me in the eye, then the other guy, he kicked me in the forehead,” Khehra said. “My turban went flying off. I went down on the ground, and when I was down on the ground, another guy, he punched me in the back of my head.”

In the video, a police car can be seen rolling up moments after Khehra is thrown to the ground. The three attackers can be seen running back to their vehicle when the police car arrives.

Quebec City police said two men were arrested. One was let go without a charge. The other, a 22-year-old, faces charges of assault and uttering threats to a police officer. Police say they are still investigating and that other charges are possible.

Khehra, who moved to Canada a year ago, says he would still visit Quebec City again for another vacation, or to testify against his attackers.

“Whatever they do, I will keep my identity as a Sikh. I will keep wearing my turban, and I am proud to wear a turban,” Khehra said.

“And there may be certain bad elements like them, but I still feel proud to live in Canada.”
