Police said Thursday that Irfan Ahmed Qureshi and Suzanne Marie Tran died as a result of gunshot wounds. It’s believed the pair were in a relationship. Qureshi had a lengthy criminal history dating back to the late 1990s when he was sentenced to four years for trafficking a controlled substance.
EDMONTON — The South Asian man and an Asian woman found dead in a west Edmonton home Wednesday have been identified as Irfan Ahmed Qureshi and Suzanne Marie Tran.
Police said Thursday that Qureshi, 37, and Tran, 27, died as a result of gunshot wounds. It’s believed the pair were in a relationship, reported Global News.
Qureshi had a lengthy criminal history dating back to the late 1990s when he was sentenced to four years for trafficking a controlled substance.
He was sentenced to nine-and-a-half years for 16 weapons charges in connection to a March 2005 incident, but given credit for time served.
In 2012, Qureshi pleaded guilty to obstructing a peace officer and was given 60 days behind bars.
A source tells Global News Qureshi was currently on statutory release for several drug and weapons-related charges.
Qureshi’s family sent a statement to Global News on Thursday night, which read, in part: “To us, he was a son, a brother, an uncle and a friend. Irfan will be greatly missed.”
The statement says Qureshi will be remembered at a private service and that the family is asking for privacy as they mourn their loss.
Tran’s criminal history dates back to 2008 when she was found guilty of possession for the purpose of trafficking. In 2015, she was given a conditional sentence for the same charge.
Qureshi and Tran are Edmonton’s seventh and eighth homicide victims of 2016, police said.
Police would not release details on any potential suspect(s).
A real estate agent found their bodies inside a home in the area of 49 Avenue and 213 Street at around 2 p.m. Wednesday.
The home was listed on MLS on March 17, 2016 but the listing was terminated Thursday. The duplex was advertised as a single family home with three bedrooms. The home is six years old.
Amanda Moledina lives in the Hamptons and said she came home Wednesday to a heavy police presence in her neighbourhood. Police asked her several questions about the man who lived in the home.
“They asked us if we knew the guy. We knew which house it was. He asked us how long he’s been here, just some simple questions – if we had seen him yesterday or today,” Moledina said.
“He’s pretty quiet. We see him most days.”
