SURREY – Sikhs for Service, a community organization dedicated to serve the Lower Mainland community, has established the Bhagat Puran Singh Sikh Community Bursary for students with disabilities at Simon Fraser University, the organization announced this week.

Four SFU Alumni have worked with the Lower Mainland Sikh Community to raise over $20,000 for this endowment over the last year. Because of the Sikh Community’s generosity, Simon Fraser University will award yearly bursaries to students with disabilities that demonstrate financial need.

The impetus of this project came from a desire to honour and continue the spirit of the work of the late Bhagat Puran Singh.

Bhagat Puran Singh was an inspiring Sikh who spent his life caring for the poor, sick and disabled. He was also an ardent healthcare and environmental activist as well as a champion of social justice. He established the Pingalwara Society which continues his mission today. Before his death, there was a movement to have him nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
