SURREY – The results of the latest census are clear: the population of Metro Vancouver is growing. But Surrey continues to attract more new residents than any other area community, reported CKNW.

This does not come as a surprise for Surrey mayor Diane Watts.

“Since the census was taken, we have probably seen another almost ten thousand people move in.”

Watts says Surrey is booming, and at this rate, the city will be home to more people than Vancouver in 10 years.

“Here’s what’s happening,” Mayor Watts explains, “people are moving to Surrey and south of the Fraser because they want to raise their kids.”

A third of the city’s population is under 19, and that poses its own challenges, with schools and post secondary institutions over-capacity.

The Surrey neighbourhood seeing some of the largest growth is Tynehead, which has more than tripled in population since 2006.
