Family Of “Gulab-Jamun” EatingContest Victim Suing PunjabiRadio Station RedFM And Others

Victim Samaljit Aulakh choked during Diwali sweet eatingcontest and suffered brain damage. Aulakh’s family is suingthe event’s organizers – Punjabi radio station RedFM andothers – for negligence . According to a lawsuit filed by Aulakh’swife, Kamaljeet, a radio broadcaster with Red FMinstructed contestants to bend over and eat gulab jamunswithout using their hands. Aulakh won the competitionand was then allegedly told by a contest organizer that ifhe threw up, he wouldn’t be able to claim the prize — a newiPhone, reported CBC news.

Aulakh has been in hospital, unable tospeak or walk, since November 2012,when he took his son to the Diwali celebrationin Surrey, sponsored by local ethnicradio station Red FM.Aulakh volunteered to go up on stage toparticipate in an eating contest involvinggulab jamuns, soft doughy Indian sweetsthe size of Timbits.According to a lawsuit filed by Aulakh’swife, Kamaljeet, a radio broadcaster withRed FM instructed contestants to bendover and eat gulab jamuns without usingtheir hands.Aulakh won the competition and wasthen allegedly told by a contest organizerthat if he threw up, he wouldn’t be ableto claim the prize — a new iPhone.Aulakh choked and fell to the ground ashis young son, Pawan, watched him turnblue in the face.Aulakh ended up in a coma for 10 daysand emerged with severe brain damage.The lawsuit alleges negligence on the partof organizers Red FM for failing toensure the event was safe and that properlytrained medical personnel were onhand.Also named in the suit are makers of thegulab jamuns, Nanak foods, and thevenue, Surrey’s Central City ShoppingCentre.Aulakh’s family is asking for damages todeal with loss of income and cover medicaland long term care costs.The allegations have not been proven incourt.
