CHANDIGARH – In a dreadful incident, three members of a family succumbed to burns after fire broke out in their house at Dayalpur village in Zirakpur, SAS Nagar district due to short-circuit, while they were asleep on Saturday at around 11.30pm.
Two other members of the family are battling for life at Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32 (GMCH-32). The deceased have been identified as Kuljeet Singh (50), an employee with Public Works Department (PWD), Punjab, his wife Surender Kaur (49) and their youngest daughter Veena, alias Nanhi.
The other two daughters battling for life in the hospital are Harpreet Kaur (19) and Paramjit Kaur (18) who suffered 60-70 percent burns. Kuljeet Singh was as a painter in the PWD department, while his wife was a housewife and daughter was studying in a private school.
The couple suffered over 90 percent burns and succumbed to burns at 7.30pm on Sunday evening at GMCH-32. No police complaint has been lodged.
Investigating officer Gurmail Singh said, “When family members went to sleep after watching TV and put their mobile on charging, the fire broke out after short-circuit in the wire passing over the bed. The family slept through the fire.”
However, later Surender Kaur gained consciousness and raised an alarm. She woke up the family and started to scream, after which villagers gathered and broke the door of the house to rescue the family.
