MIAMI – Glenn Greenwald, theformer Guardian reporter whobroke many of the recent storiesabout secret US surveillanceprogrammes, claimed onMonday that all Latin Americancountries had been spied on byWashington.Speaking to a press association,he said he would report abouteach case in the region andwarned that more spying withinthe United States would also berevealed.Greenwald’s comments came asFrance and Mexico angrilydemanded swift explanations onMonday about fresh leaks byformer US security contractorEdward Snowden.The leaks alleged the UnitedStates had spied on millions ofFrench phone communicationsand that the National SecurityAgency (NSA) had also hackedinto former Mexican presidentFelipe Calderon’s email account.Greenwald, an American journalistliving in Brazil, spoke viavideo conference to the 69thassembly of the Inter AmericanPress Association (IAPA).Multiple Latin American meetingswere monitored,Greenwald said, including thoseof the Organization ofAmerican States (OAS), as wellas talks on free trade treaties,although he did not go intomore details. According toGreenwald, disclosures releasedon Monday by the French newspaperLe Monde, which createdcontroversy between Paris andWashington, had been in thehands of the French daily forsome time.
