SURREY – An Indo-Canadian man has been charged with the murder of a 61-year-old woman in Surrey early Sunday morning.

Sukhvir Badhesa, 39, has been charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault, and uttering threats. He will appear in Surrey provincial court Monday afternoon. He is believed to be the woman’s son-in-law, according to reports but police have not confirmed this as fact.

The RCMP was called to a home in the 10100-block of 128A Street around 5:40 a.m. after receiving reports of a disturbance.

Mounties found a woman with life-threatening injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 35-year-old woman was also found with non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital.

The RCMP arrested Badhesa at the home who they say is related to both women. Officers are calling the incident a “domestic violence related homicide.”

Neighbours told CTV News that a man and a woman, along with his mother and the couple’s two girls, lived at the house.

Parmvir Gill lives next door, and says his aunt saw officers take their neighbour down.

“He was apparently in his driveway and six cops pulled up and he ran at them and they tasered him,” said Gill. “They’re pretty quiet people. Never yelling, nothing. No fighting at all, so I’m pretty shocked.”

“It’s a sad day for our neighbourhood,” added one woman who declined to give her name, noting it was “heartbreaking” to watch police take the children away.

“One police officer had the baby over his shoulder, it was very, very sad,” she said. “The little girl who is about seven just walked beside him and looked around in a daze… that’s very tragic to me.”

IHIT has taken over the case, and an investigation is ongoing.

“IHIT was able to move very quickly through the initial stages of this investigation as a result of the quick work of Surrey RCMP in identifying what can be described as a domestic violence related homicide,” said Sgt. Stephanie Ashton of IHIT.

Badhesa made an appearance at Surrey Provincial Court at 1:30 p.m. Monday.
