PANCHKULA – Former Punjab MLA’s son and his friend were killed when their Skoda Laura car hit a divider near the Chandimandir toll plaza in Panchkula district in the early hours today.

The victims, Jagteshwar Singh Talwandi, 22, son of Ranjit Singh Talwandi, former MLA from Raikot constituency near Ludhiana, and Prabhsimran Singh, alias Anmol, had gone for a joyride on the Himalayan Expressway in Pinjore.

Both were students of DAV College, Sector 10, Chandigarh. While Jagteshwar, who was pursuing law from the college, was a resident of Sector 39, Chandigarh, Anmol, a student of MA-II, was a resident of Sector 33, Chandigarh.

The police said Anmol was driving the car, while Jagteshwar was sitting beside him. The incident took place around 4.45 am, when both were returning from the expressway. The police said when the driver dozed off, the car skidded towards a kuccha area on the left side. On waking up, Anmol tried to get back on the road. “However, Anmol then lost control over the car, first hit a pole and then the divider,” said Assistant Sub-Inspector Resham Singh, the investigating officer.

Jagteshwar, who got injured, wriggled out of the damaged car and sought help. A few Army men passing by called the ambulance.

Anmol and Jagteshwar were rushed to General Hospital, Sector 6, where Anmol was declared brought dead and Jagteshwar was referred to PGI, Chandigarh, where he succumbed to his injuries. The local police got the information from the hospital around 7 am.

Anmol, who was also preparing for civil services, was the only son of his parents. His father had already expired. Friends of the boys at the hospital were inconsolable.
