SUVA – The retail price of milk will still be controlled by the Commerce Commission. Fiji Dairy Limited says this will ensure that consumers are protected.

The clarification came in response to yesterday’s The Fiji Times article that wrongly stated that the prices of Fiji Dairy Limited products would not be controlled.

Fiji Dairy Limited executive chairperson Amita Singh said the price control would also no longer be applied to the wholesale price of milk.

“This will enable a better price to be paid to the dairy farmers who supply milk to Fiji Dairy Limited,” Ms Singh said in a statement.

Commerce Commission chairman Dr Mahendra Reddy, in a letter to The Fiji Times yesterday, said the commission would only control retail prices and the new order would be effective from Monday, September 26, 2011.

He said retail prices would still be regulated and would be fixed and determined by the commission as currently practised.

“The commission will continue to fix and determine the maximum retail prices, which the retailers have to abide by,” Dr Reddy stated.
